An eco-responsible scarf
The cotton used for this scarf comes from a 100% local and 100% handmade cultivation and transformation process.
All stages are carried out in Laos in the region of Luang Prabang, in the north of the country. The mountains and the humid climate are conducive to the cultivation of natural cotton that does not require irrigation, fertilizers or pesticides. This cotton is cultivated in family agriculture, together with other food crops such as rice.
Cotton is harvested by hand, then ginned, spun and woven by hand, with only a few machines built locally with recovered materials.
A fair approach
The cultivation and weaving of cotton meets two needs for families in the Laotian mountains:
- To dress and thus to transmit the culture of the ethnic group of the village through traditional dyes and patterns
- To obtain external income that will improve daily life
In fact, the villages where MUUDANA’s scarves and fabrics are made are almost self-sufficient. Food, houses, small tools … everything is produced locally. Cotton weaving is an activity that allows women to earn money that will be used to pay for what they cannot manufacture themselves: health and education expenses, rice and food in case of insufficient agricultural production.
Buying a scarf from one of these villages has therefore a real impact on the producers’s quality of life. In addition, it promotes greater autonomy and independence for women. To learn more about this topic you can read our article on fashion and women’s rights
Of course, MUUDANA ensures that the craftswomen are remunerated fairly for the work carried out by working in the field with recognized and experienced associations.
The manufacture of this scarf involves many traditional know-how today endangered by fast-fashion:
- local cotton cultivation
- cotton spinning (to transform it from fiber to yarn)
- weaving cotton on a manual wooden loom
- natural indigo dye
These skills tend to disappear as the younger generations are attracted by the prospect of an “easier” life in the city working in factories. Which turns out to be false in reality, but the damage has already been done when a young person leaves the village …
Through its purchases, MUUDANA offers prospects for traditional crafts so that they are not devalued and offers real and attractive life prospects for the communities that make them.
